- A review of related literature includes scholarly journals, books, authoritative databases, and primary sources.
- Secondary sources, such as newspapers, magazines, video, audio, and more, are also sometimes included.
- The literature must be recent, with a publication year of 5 to 10 years ago.
- The literature must be objective and unbiased.
- The literature must be closely related to the present study.
- The literature must be based on original and true facts or data for validity and reliability.
- Related studies are investigations that have been conducted that are closely related to the present study.
Purpose of Reviewing Literature
- Guides researchers in selecting the best research problem or topic.
- Helps researchers understand the research better.
- Prevents duplication of other studies.
- Provides the conceptual or theoretical framework of the planned research.

Sources of Information

Primary Sources: Offer original information about a study or topic.

- Ask for reprints from experts.
- Take down notes on index cards or a research notebook. Organize your notes by devising sections and headings:

- Write down all bibliographical information (author(s), complete title, publisher, date and place of publication, etc.).
- Paraphrase the information using your own words.
How to Write a Review of Related Literature

- Avoid lengthy introductions to your main topic.
- Include only information that is directly related and relevant to your topic.
- Limit each paragraph to a maximum of half-page (double-spaced).
