Study Notes

Respiratory System

  • The respiratory system has two parts: upper respiratory system and lower respiratory system.

Upper Respiratory System

  • Consists of:
    • Nose & Nasal cavity
    • Pharynx
    • Larynx

Lower Respiratory System

  • Consists of:
    • Trachea
    • Bronchi
    • Bronchioles
    • Alveoli

Nose & Nasal Cavity

  • Air enters and leaves the respiratory system through the nose.
  • Made of bone and cartilage.
  • Covered with skin.
  • Hairs inside the nostrils help block the entry of dust.
  • The two nasal cavities are within the skull, separated by the nasal septum.
  • Shelf-like bones called conchae project from the lateral wall of each nasal cavity.

Mucous Membrane

  • Lines the nasal cavity.
  • Two mucous membranes:
    • Olfactory mucous membrane:
      • Lines the upper surface of the superior concha & the sphenoid ethmoid.
      • Function: Reception of olfactory stimuli.
    • Respiratory mucous membrane:
      • Lines the lower part of the nasal cavity.
      • Function: To warm, moisten, & clean inspired air.

Pharynx

  • Passageway for food and air from the nasal cavity to the larynx.

Larynx

  • Protected by the epiglottis.

Trachea

  • Carries air to the two main branches of air tubes called the bronchi.

Bronchi

  • Divides into smaller branches called bronchioles.

Bronchioles

  • Terminate in tiny air sacs called the alveoli.
  • Site of gas exchange.

Alveoli

  • Sites of gas exchange.
  • Oxygen moves from the alveoli into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide moves from the bloodstream into the alveoli.

Learn about the different parts of the respiratory system, including the upper and lower respiratory systems, and their functions. Identify the components of the nose and nasal cavity.
