Study Notes
Respiratory System
- The respiratory system has two parts: upper respiratory system and lower respiratory system.
Upper Respiratory System
- Consists of:
- Nose & Nasal cavity
- Pharynx
- Larynx
Lower Respiratory System
- Consists of:
- Trachea
- Bronchi
- Bronchioles
- Alveoli
Nose & Nasal Cavity
- Air enters and leaves the respiratory system through the nose.
- Made of bone and cartilage.
- Covered with skin.
- Hairs inside the nostrils help block the entry of dust.
- The two nasal cavities are within the skull, separated by the nasal septum.
- Shelf-like bones called conchae project from the lateral wall of each nasal cavity.
Mucous Membrane
- Lines the nasal cavity.
- Two mucous membranes:
- Olfactory mucous membrane:
- Lines the upper surface of the superior concha & the sphenoid ethmoid.
- Function: Reception of olfactory stimuli.
- Respiratory mucous membrane:
- Lines the lower part of the nasal cavity.
- Function: To warm, moisten, & clean inspired air.
- Olfactory mucous membrane:
Pharynx
- Passageway for food and air from the nasal cavity to the larynx.
Larynx
- Protected by the epiglottis.
Trachea
- Carries air to the two main branches of air tubes called the bronchi.
Bronchi
- Divides into smaller branches called bronchioles.
Bronchioles
- Terminate in tiny air sacs called the alveoli.
- Site of gas exchange.
Alveoli
- Sites of gas exchange.
- Oxygen moves from the alveoli into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide moves from the bloodstream into the alveoli.
