Study Notes

  • The nose has both bony and cartilaginous parts

Nasopharynx

  • A space behind the nose that ends as the larynx

Larynx

  • A tube formed of smooth muscle and hyaline cartilage
  • Connects the nasopharynx with the trachea

Trachea

  • A tube formed of C-shaped hyaline cartilage and a smooth muscle
  • Ends in a bifurcation into two main bronchi called the Carina
    • The bronchi subdivide into bronchioles
    • Bronchioles end in sac-like structures called alveoli, which are the site of gas exchange

Lungs

  • Surrounded by serous membrane called the Pleura
    • The right lung consists of 3 lobes
    • The left lung consists of 2 lobes
    • The lungs lie inside the thoracic cage, which is formed by the sternum, ribs, and thoracic vertebrae
    • Arterial blood reaches the lungs through the bronchial and pulmonary arteries
    • Blood leaves the lungs through the pulmonary veins

Important Note

  • Lung cancer is the first cause of death due to malignancy
