Study Notes
Resource Sustainability
- Natural Resources: Elements of the environment providing goods/services (e.g., air, sunlight, water, land, plants, animals, geological resources).
- Ecological Footprint: Quantifies human impact, measuring resource use and waste generation (measured in hectares).
- Ecological Overshoot: Situation where resource demand exceeds Earth's supply.
- Sustainability: Meeting current needs without compromising future generations' needs.
- Actions for Sustainability: Reduce waste, reuse/recycle/repurpose materials, conserve water/energy, limit plastics, use reusable items.
Types of Industries
- Industry: Economic activity processing raw materials for goods/services. Creates jobs, income, and trade.
- Primary Industries: Extract raw materials (e.g., mining, agriculture, forestry, fishing, oil/gas extraction). Contribute about 6% of Canada's goods/services value.
- Secondary Industries: Process raw materials into finished goods (e.g., manufacturing, construction, food processing).
- Tertiary Industries: Provide services (e.g., retail, transportation, entertainment, healthcare, finance, education).
- Quaternary Industries: Focus on knowledge transmission (e.g., research, development, education, ICT, management, scientific research).
Energy Resources in Canada
- Conventional Energy: Fossil fuels (oil, gas, coal), nuclear power. Cost-effective, accessible, high energy output, but non-renewable and polluting.
- Alternative Energy: Renewable sources (solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, biomass, hydro). Clean burning, but can be more geographically restrictive or have other impacts.
- Unconventional Energy: Extracting resources from deep rock formations (e.g., fracking).
- Main Uses of Energy: Industry, agriculture, transportation, residential, commercial, institutional/public buildings.
- Renewable Energy Sources in Canada: Hydroelectric power is Canada's largest renewable energy source (59.3%). Wind and biomass are also significant (3.5% and 1.4% respectively).
Oil Sands & TMX
- Trans Mountain Pipeline: Crude oil pipeline from Edmonton to Vancouver, with export options to other countries.
- Alberta Oil Sands: Large deposits of oil sands near Lake Athabasca, Peace River, and Cold Lake.
- Oil Sands Extraction Methods:
- Surface Mining: Extracts shallower deposits using large equipment.
- In-situ: Extracts deeper deposits by pushing water or solvents underground to release bitumen.
- Oil Sands Characteristics: Non-renewable resource. Crude oil processed for use in homes, factories, vehicles, and plastics.
- Bitumen Extraction Process: Processes separates bitumen from sand and water; the separated water and sand is deposited in toxic tailings ponds. Heated freshwater (using natural gas) used to extract bitumen.
