Resocialization
- Resocialization is the process of replacing previously learned norms and values with new ones as a part of a transition in life.
- It occurs when a person's previous understanding of society was incorrect or when they progress from one stage in life to another and need new information.
- Resocialization can happen through normal agents of socialization or through a total institution.
Total Institutions
- A total institution is a place where individuals are cut off from the rest of society to control and regulate their lives.
- The purpose of a total institution is to systematically strip away previous roles and identities in order to create new ones.
- Examples of total institutions include prisons and military training.
Socialization
- Socialization helps us understand our place in society, others' relative power, our responsibilities, and how to extricate ourselves from them.
- The goal of socialization is to teach us our position in society and who has power in a given situation.
Status
- Status refers to the responsibilities and benefits a person experiences according to their rank and role in society.
- A person's status set is all the statuses they hold at one time based on being in different social situations.
- Examples of statuses include being a child of a parent and a student of a teacher at the same time.
Types of Statuses
- Ascribed status is a social position one does not select, but is born into, such as being a daughter or son.
- Achieved status is a social position a person takes on voluntarily and is achieved by choice, such as becoming a professor.

- Social construction is the process by which a concept or practice is created and maintained by participants who collectively agree that it exists.
