Study Notes
Rescue Team Procedures
- Rescue Company follows the same procedures as Truck Company when splitting into two teams, but one team has three members
- Radio designations are “Rescue” and “Rescue Alpha”
Back Up Team
- Before any team enters a hot zone, a two-person back up team must be in place
- Back up team must be fully equipped and ready to assist the entry team
- Back up team cannot be performing other essential duties at the time they are standing by
- Back up team exception: immediate action must be taken to save a life or prevent serious injury
Second Ladder Company
- Position apparatus in a non-committed area
- Report to the Incident Commander as one team
- Report with proper tool selection for the assignment
Crew Assignment for Second Ladder Company
- Roof ventilation is the #1 priority
- Additional forcible entry requirements
- Supplement ventilation needs: expand horizontal ventilation, vertical ventilation of roof
- Check exposures for extension
- Check for hidden fire
- General overhaul and salvage duties
- Check utilities
Universal Considerations for Ladder Companies
- Report to the Incident Commander for orders
- Apparatus placement for aerial work must be considered
- Flat roof operations
- Ladder company should be part of the truck company size-up
- If aerial is to be used a member must be at the turntable and the pump panel
- Thermal imaging camera will be deployed at all structure fires
- Report to Incident Commander/Accountability Officer any change in floor level within a structure
- Report in/out of structure through Command Post/Accountability Officer
- Keep crew intact, Officer is to know where each member of the crew is
- Additional incoming truck companies shall stage and wait for orders
- General tool selection must reflect the assignment and type of structure
Parking Guidelines
- Park uphill, upwind
- Stay out of spills, from under wires, out of smoke
- For hazardous cargo, use D.O.T. guidelines for suggested zones
Dispatch Notification
- Situation found, actions being taken
- Additional resources needed
- Notifications i.e. police, State troopers, power company, EMS
Engine Company Fire Attack
- Hose Stretch - Minimum of 100’ of 1¾” hose
- Stream Use - Depending on conditions, stream should initially be operated from an extended range and slowly worked in
- Forcible Entry / Overhaul - May be needed to open doors, trunk, cargo area
- Alternate extinguishing agents can be used
Termination of Engine Company Fire Attack
- Collect and record all pertinent information
- Secure area
- Terminate Command
- Return to quarters, Truck Officer to do paper work
Vehicle Fire General Safety Issues
- Establish a safety zone
- Protective gear
- Potential Dangers: traffic, fuel tanks, alternate fuels, exploding of bumpers, struts, shocks, batteries, tires, hazardous cargo
Master Streams
- Master Streams include Ladder Pipes, Blitzfire Monitors and fixed Turrets on Engines
- Master Streams are used in circumstances where smaller hand lines are not sufficient
- Master Streams are used in defensive operations
- No master stream shall be introduced into a structure where interior firefighting operations are being performed!
Master Stream Purpose
- To make BFD personnel aware of the benefits and inherent dangers of the use of Master Streams
Master Stream Definition
- Master Streams are heavy caliber hose streams using fixed/portable appliances rated at 400-1000+ GPM
Master Stream Vertical Reach
- Streams can be directed into upper floors of multi-storied buildings
- Can penetrate into floor areas when used at the proper angle
Factors Affecting Master Streams
- Gravity creates a natural arc
- Tail Wind increases horizontal range
- Head Wind increases vertical reach
- Proper pressure at the tip
Solid Stream Benefits
- Solid streams deliver more water with greater punch power
- Solid streams can tear apart a building and perform “Hydraulic Overhaul”
- Solid stream can also cause serious damage to anything in its path, including exposure buildings and their components
Fog Stream Benefits
- Fog stream creates a water curtain to protects exposures and buildings in danger
- Fog stream can be used to cool a Storage Tank from a distance
- Fog stream has limitations that should be noted
