    Study Notes

    Renal Anatomy

    • The renal capsule is a thin, membranous sheath that covers the outer surface of each kidney, composed of tough fibers (collagen and elastin) to support and protect the kidney.
    • The renal capsule is surrounded by a layer of fat called the adipose capsule or perirenal fat, which helps to keep the kidney protected.

    Blood Flow

    • Blood flows into the kidneys through the renal artery, which is connected to the aorta, the major vessel that brings oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body.
    • Blood exits each kidney through the renal vein, which is connected to the inferior vena cava, taking the deoxygenated blood back to the heart to be oxygenated again.

    Renal Pyramids

    • Each kidney has several "pyramidal tissue masses" located in the medulla, made up of a dense network of nephrons and tubules.
    • These tubules transport fluid into the kidney and later on, this fluid will move away from the nephrons toward the inner structures that will collect and transport urine out of the kidney.

    Kidney Structure

    • The kidney has an outer layer called the renal cortex, which houses and protects the inner structures of the kidney.
    • The medulla is near the innermost part of the kidney, where urine formation takes place, and contains the renal pyramids.

    Renal Function

    • The kidneys filter about 142 liters of blood per day, with only one to two liters becoming urine.
    • The kidneys play a crucial role in removing excess fluid and waste products from the body.

    Renal Protection

    • Structures that help to protect the kidneys include the renal capsule, perirenal fat, and renal fascia, which are meant to cushion and protect the kidneys from damage, trauma, and shock.
