Definition of Religion

  • A system of faith and worship, or a belief in and worship of a supernatural controlling or having powers, especially a god or gods.

Religions in Ghana

  • Three main religions in Ghana: Christianity, Islam, and African Traditional Religion (ATR).

Christianity

  • Based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
  • Believes in monotheism, one God, in Jesus Christ who is the son of God the Messiah.
  • Jesus was crucified, died, and was buried, and on the third day, he rose from the dead (the Resurrection).
  • Believe that through faith in Jesus Christ, individuals can be saved from sin and eternal death, and receive eternal life with God (Salvation).
  • God exists in three persons: the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit.
  • Finds inspiration and guidance in the sacred text, the Bible.
  • The Bible consists of the Old Testament (shared with Judaism) and the New Testament, which includes the Gospels, letters from early Christian leaders (epistles), and other writings.
  • Practices include singing praises and worship.
  • Worship often involves prayer, singing hymns.
  • Typically, the main days of communal worship are Sunday or Saturday.
  • Many Christians observe sacraments, sacred rites believed to confer grace.
  • The most commonly observed sacraments are Baptism and the Eucharist (Communion).
