RBT Ethics Code Overview

The RBT ethics code comprises three sections: Responsible Conduct, Responsibility to Clients, and Competence in Service Delivery.
Section 1: Responsible Conduct includes codes 1.01 to 1.13.

Section 1.01: Values and Core Principles

RBTs are required to uphold and promote the values and core principles of behavior analysis.

Dimensions of Applied Behavior Analysis

Dimensions defined by Baer, Wolf, & Risley (1968) include Applied, Behavioral, Analytic, Technological, Conceptually Systematic, Effective, and Generalized.

Derived Values of Applied Behavior Analysis

Fundamental values derived from the ethics code and literature involve:
- Doing no harm and fostering meaningful change.
- Relying on scientific knowledge and acting in clients' best interests.
- Conducting services with integrity and protecting client confidentiality, human rights, and dignity.

Section 1.02: Familiarity with the Code

RBTs must continually familiarize themselves with the ethics code, as ignorance does not absolve them from unethical conduct.

Section 1.03: Promoting an Ethical Culture

RBTs are responsible for promoting an ethical culture in their work environments, which includes making others aware of the code and fostering ethical practices through interactions and documentation.

Truthfulness and Honesty (Section 1.04)

RBTs must be truthful and honest in their professional conduct and arrange environments encouraging similar behaviors in others.
Professional commitments should be followed through with high-quality work, avoiding overpromising.

Avoiding Falsehoods

Truthfulness also necessitates avoiding false or deceptive statements in communication and professional practice.

Section 1.03/1.10: Public Statements

RBTs must avoid making false, misleading, or fraudulent public statements about their work or those they are affiliated with.
Only behavior analytic degrees can be claimed as credentials in their work.

Promoting Ethical Culture: Specific Practices

Encourage direct communication when ethical issues arise, and get familiarized with ethical guidelines.
Seek mentorship for addressing ambiguous ethical situations.
Report unresolved ethical issues to the BACB and support colleagues in maintaining ethical standards.

Addressing Ethical Violations (Response Process)

Initial assessment of potential ethical or legal violations should consider the risk of harm and relevant regulations.
If violations are confirmed, actions must be taken to protect clients, notify authorities, and document the response.

Exam Honesty in Relation to Ethics Codes

Violating exam honesty standards can lead to withdrawal of eligibility, cancellation of scores, or revocation of certification.

Compliance and Reporting Requirements

RBTs must adhere to BACB testing standards and immediately report any unethical behaviors related to exam conduct, ensuring integrity and transparency in the examination process.
