Study Notes
Chapter 1: Introduction
- Chapter by Danica Tumang aims to differentiate between quality and quantity
- The chapter will also discuss the difference between quality of design, quality conformance and quality of performance and give examples of effective and efficient
Quality & Quantity
- Quality is the degree of excellence of something, a distinctive attribute, or the relative nature of its character
- Quantity is the measurable property of things, referring to the size, extent, weight, amount, or number
Quality in Total Quality Management
- "Delighting the customer by fully meeting their needs and also their expectations"
- Needs and expectations include performance, appearance, availability, delivery, reliability, maintainability, cost effectiveness and price
- Organizations need to identify and understand customer needs and expectations, plus they are required measure their own ability to meet them
Determining Quality
- Quality starts with market research to establish the requirements and needs of the customers
- Quality spans all aspects of an organization, including functions, people, departments, and activities
- Cooperation is necessary to achieve total quality
- Customers often link quality to feature-based measures and performance measures
Customer and Producer Views
- Customer view of quality design considers factors like both the features and performance measure to assess value with value = quality / price
- Producer view of quality emphasizes conformance to requirements and the number of defects per million products
- Conformance cost of quality includes prevention, appraisal, scrap, and warranty costs
Cost Consideration
- Prevention cost involves training and writing quality procedures
- Appraisal costs are for inspecting and measuring product characteristics.
- Scrap and rework costs are internal costs of defective products, while warranty costs are external costs.
Quality Paradigms
- Customer-craft quality paradigm focuses on designing and building each product for a specific customer.
- Mass production and inspection quality paradigm focuses on designing products for mass consumption.
- Quality is preserved by inspecting and detecting bad products
Aspects of Quality
- Quality of design is influenced by product type, cost, profit policy, demand, availability of parts, and reliability.
- Quality of conformance involves inspection, testing, or statistical data analysis to detect defects
- Root cause analysis is done to prevent recurrence, and prevention deals and is achieved by statistical control processes
- Quality of performance is determined when a product meets customer expectations.
Effective vs Efficient
- Effective means doing the right things
- Efficient means doing things the right way
