Study Notes
Faculty Vision
- The faculty aspires to be a recognized educational institution, regionally and internationally, through advanced educational programs, innovative applied research, and sustainable community development.
Faculty Mission
- The mission is to train knowledgeable and well-trained dentists committed to human values and professional ethics.
- This is achieved by creating advanced educational programs aligned with the actual needs of the local and global labor market.
- The faculty is dedicated to producing applied research that aligns with national strategies.
- They also aim to provide sustainable community service aligned with international quality standards.
Anatomical Landmarks of Prosthetic Interest - Objectives
- Define anatomical landmarks.
- Differentiate between bony and soft tissue landmarks.
- Identify extra-oral anatomical landmarks, and their relationship to complete denture construction.
SLOs - Key Learning Outcomes
- Recognize extra-oral landmarks crucial for prosthetic complete dentures.
- Define Camper's line.
- Identify Willis' guide.
- Recognize anatomical landmarks that demarcate the boundaries of maxillary and mandibular dentures.
- Identify anatomical landmarks for denture-bearing areas of maxillary and mandibular dentures.
Denture Construction Guides
- Denture construction relies on anatomical guides, categorized into bony and soft tissue landmarks.
Bony vs. Soft Tissue Landmarks
- Bony Landmarks: Determining some bony landmarks can be challenging, while others are easily palpable. They stay fixed in place. Measurements based on bony landmarks can be replicated accurately.
- Soft Tissue Landmarks: Easily identified, their positions change according to their mobility.
Extra-Oral Landmarks
- Vermillion Border: The transitional epithelium between lip skin and mucous membrane. The amount depends on the bulk of the orbicularis oris muscle, the amount of labial alveolar bone, and the alignment of anterior teeth.
- Philtrum of the Lip: A diamond-shaped depression at the center of the upper lip and the base of the nose. After tooth loss and alveolar bone resorption it may flatten.
- Nasolabial Sulcus: A depression extending laterally and downwards from the ala of the nose. More prominent with aging due to tooth loss and loss of vertical dimension. Plumpers (thick denture flanges) can improve the sulcus but can sometimes interfere with muscular activity.
- Mentolabial sulcus: This is a depression that runs horizontally between the lower lip and chin.
- Ala-tragus line (Camper's line): An imaginary line from the superior border of the tragus of the ear to the inferior border of the ala of the nose; used to establish the posterior occlusal plane of artificial teeth
- Inter-pupillary line: The imaginary line joining the pupils of the eye. It is used to establish the anterior occlusal plane of artificial teeth.
- The angle of the mouth and the outer canthus of the eye: The distance between these is used to determine the vertical dimension of a patient at rest, useful for prosthetic purposes.
Modiolus
- Located where the buccinator and other facial muscles meet, distal to the angle of the mouth. It can appear to drop with tooth loss. Positioning of maxillary teeth can improve this appearance.
Case Notes
- A 65-year-old patient presented requesting restoration of lost maxillary and mandibular teeth as related to a dental clinic visit.
- The case entails identifying extra-oral landmarks.
- Selecting the appropriate prosthetic appliance.
- Listing clinical and laboratory procedures for related treatment.
