Study Notes
- Project Quality Management (SSUD12-114)
- Course is for Bachelor of Project Management, Faculty of Society & Design
- Lecturer: Siddra Qayyum
Introduction Questions:
- Share something about yourself.
- Share something you enjoy.
- Share a childhood memory.
- Share a guess about yourself that people wouldn't expect.
- Share something you can't live without.
- Share something you watch or listen to.
PMBOK Core Concepts
- The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) is covered
- Key areas include:
- Planning Quality Management (PMBOK 8.1)
- Performing Quality Assurance (PMBOK 8.2)
- Controlling Quality (PMBOK 8.4)
Assignments and Exams
- Assessment is based on two assignments worth 25% each and a formal exam worth 50%
- Assignment 1 entails a "Quality Assurance & Audit plan" due in Week 5
- Assignment 2 entails a "defects and its rectification report" due in Week 10.
- Assignments are based on a case study uploaded in ilearn
- The online exam includes multiple-choice questions in Week 14
- Tutorial tasks must be submitted electronically to SSUD12-119 Project Integration Management
Quality Management
- It's not enough to ensure the project is on time and under budget
- You must also ensure the product suits the stakeholders' needs.
- Quality is building what you promise efficiently.
What is Quality?
- Applies principles of setting goals and taking measurements.
Poor Quality Consequences
-
Result in increased spending on inspections, testing, and certification
-
Result in increased time to get things right the first time
-
Result in increased work complications
-
Quality Management is defined as delivering what was designed and specified.
-
It Includes:
-
Avoiding defects that result from poor execution
-
Resulting in potentially costly fixes and delays in project handover due to rework
Project Quality Management (PQM)
-
This is a set of processes to achieve project quality
-
Provides assurance through inspection, testing, and certification
-
There are three processes within PQM:
-
Planning quality management
-
Managing quality
-
Controlling quality
Quality Definition
- Quality focus produces deliverables that meet project objectives
- Delivers alignment to the needs, uses, and acceptance requirements set forth by stakeholders
Quality Dimensions
- Performance: Does a deliverable function as expected
- Conformity: Does it meet specifications and requirements in the contract
- Reliability: Does it produce consistent metrics
- Resilience: Is the deliverable able to cope with unforeseen failures, and recover quickly
- Satisfaction: Does it elicit positive feedback from customers or end-users; initiate a positive user experience
- Uniformity: Does it show parity with similar deliverables
- Efficiency: Does it produce a high ratio of performance output compared to input
- Sustainability: Does it have a positive influence on financial, social, ethical, and environmental outcomes
Quality Management Processes
- Creating a Quality Management Plan
- Performing Quality Assurance
- Quality Control
- Quality is measured by how closely a product meets its requirements.
Quality
- Customer satisfaction is ensuring people are happy with what they get.
- Fitness for use is ensuring the product has the best design possible.
- Conformance to requirements is the core of both: customer satisfaction, and fitness for use.
How Quality Management Works in Waterfall and Agile Projects
- Waterfall Projects:
- Follow a linear, sequential approach
- Are highly process-driven.
- Planning Quality: Quality standards and requirements are defined upfront
- Managing Quality: Quality is ensured through rigid adherence to design, specifications, and documented procedures
- Controlling Quality: Inspection and testing confirm compliance before moving to the next phase. -- Key Challenge: Inflexibility, where defects identified late in the process require significant rework, adding cost and delays.
- Agile Projects:
- Emphasize adaptability, iterative development, and continuous improvement
- Planning Quality: Quality is built into each iteration (or sprint)
- Managing Quality: Collaboration via Kanban boards and stand-ups
- Controlling Quality: Integrated quality assurance through automated testing, peer reviews, and feedback loops -- Key Strength: Early defect detection/correction reduces rework and improves deliverables.
- Waterfall relies on upfront planning for quality, while Agile builds quality into each iteration
- Both approaches require robust quality assurance practices to succeed.
Team Allocations
- Each team should seek one to two students to work with on the six assignments for the three subjects
- Each team member shares the same mark regardless of their contribution
- Remaining team members can agree on team members who are no longer part of the team
- Lecturers will ensure the team's decision is justified and intervene if it is not
