Study Notes

Historical Background of Development Training

  • Developed from five core elements in development work: conscientization, adult education, participatory development, empowerment, and community organizing.

Key Concepts in Training

  • Training is the systematic acquisition of knowledge, skills, and formation of attitude and values that result in improved performance in various work environments.
  • Training aims to facilitate both individual and group growth, and strengthen skills for sustained and systematic actions.

Conscientization

  • Process of raising people's critical awareness of reality, enabling them to transform their objective conditions (Paulo Freire, 1974).
  • Opposite of domesticating education, which negates people's experiences and views them as passive observers of change.

Empowerment

  • Aims to enable trainees to make themselves better than they were before they were trained.
  • Creates self-reliant communities and involves capacity building, change and its management, democratic processes, and change agents acting as capability builders and enablers.
  • Has its roots in liberating education and aims to reach the majority, the less privileged and poor sectors of society.

Learning Theories and Styles

Structural Learning Theory (Joseph Scandura)

  • Learner relies on systematic planning and develops theories and ideas to solve problems.
  • Problem-solving may be facilitated when higher-order rules are used, i.e., rules that generate new rules.

Kolb's Learning Styles Model

Diverger

  • Prefers to watch rather than do, likes to gather information and brainstorm, and is sensitive, imaginative, and emotional.

Assimilator

  • Requires good, clear explanation rather than practical demonstration, likes to think and watch, and is analytical and logical.

Synergogy (Robert Blake)

  • A systematic approach to learning in which members of small teams learn from one another through structured interactions and non-directive intervention.

Transformative Learning (Jack Mezirow)

  • Learning that makes meaning of a person's life, and learning about one's life.

Program Management

  • Involves logistics and administrative concerns in implementing a training program.

Training Design Matrix

  • Serves as the blueprint of all the learning activities that learners will experience during the whole training program.

Course Design

  • Contains rationale, objectives, subject matters/topics, methodologies, and resources to be used in the conduct of the training.

Evaluation

  • A process wherein objectives are compared with actual outcomes, and results are assessed.
