    CNO Fitness to Practice Process (3 Stages)

    • 1. Health Inquiry: Employer reports concerns about a nurse’s ability to practice safely. The CNO Executive Director approves or investigates and prioritizes concerns (immediate concerns reported immediately).

    • 2. Fitness to Practice Committee: The ICRC (Inquiries, Complaints, and Reports Committee) reviews and if necessary, refers the nurse to the Fitness to Practice Committee. Involves an agreement or formal hearing. Nurses can volunteer to obtain treatment or surrender their certificate of registration.

    • 3. The Public Register: The Registrar publicizes any restrictions imposed on a nurse's practice, which may include not being able to practice in certain roles in the future or loss of professional license. Restrictions posted may be removed if no public threat persists.

    The Nurses' Health Program (NHP)

    • Ontario-based, bilingual voluntary program for nurses.
