Course Objectives
- Students will gain an understanding of probability theory and statistics concepts related to random variables.
- Students will learn the rules of probability theory and be able to calculate probabilities for both discrete and continuous random variables.
- Students will understand the concept of a probability distribution function and its connection to probabilities for continuous random variables.
- Students will be able to state the Central Limit Theorem and describe its implications.
- Students will understand the concept of sampling a population and factors that can influence sample results.
- Students will be able to perform statistical inference calculations based on a sample mean.
Class Information and Notes
- Attendance in class is expected.
- Be respectful to others in class and refrain from distracting behaviour.
- Raise your hand to ask questions during class, the professor will respond when appropriate.
- Engage in active learning by understanding the reasoning behind course materials.
- Prepare for the next class session by reviewing notes, checking comprehension, and reading ahead.
- Contact the instructor immediately if you have any questions about the course.
- Review the weekly assignment as soon as it’s posted to seek help via email or during office hours if needed.

About the Instructor
- The instructor’s name is Keith De’Bell, his email address is [email protected].
- His office is GH214 (inside GH216).
- Refer to him as Keith, Professor De’Bell, or Dr. De’Bell.
- Office hours are Monday and Wednesday 9:30-10:20 am and Tuesday 9:30-11:20 am.
- Appointments are not required for office hours.
- The instructor is often in his office before the official start of office hours.
- Office hours end promptly at the stated time to allow for the next class.
- Office hours are only held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays when there are classes, excluding University Holidays.
- The office is shared and may be visited by other students, so personal matters should not be discussed there.
Email Communication
- You are welcome to contact the instructor about the course via email.
- Expect a reply within two working days (Monday-Friday excluding University Holidays).
- Check the D2L course page for information before sending an email.
- Avoid sending multiple emails on the same subject within two working days.
- Include the course in the subject line of the email.
- Clearly define the materials section being referred and state a specific question when asking about course materials.
- If asking about an assignment, clearly state the assignment number, question and part (if applicable), and a specific question.
- Use your UNB email account only.
Appointments
- Student questions are typically addressed via email or during office hours.
- To arrange a meeting with the instructor outside of office hours, contact him via email explaining the reason for the appointment.
- Meetings outside of office hours are conducted online via Microsoft Teams.
Course Materials
- Course materials and announcements, including lecture summaries, are posted on the D2L course page.
Course Grading Scheme
- Assignments: 20%
- Midterm 1: 15%
- Midterm 2: 15%
- Final Exam: 50%
Assignments
- Assignments are posted on the D2L page one week before the deadline.
- Assignments must be submitted through the D2L system by the stated deadline.
- No deadline extensions are granted.
- Assignment answers are submitted via a D2L multiple-choice quiz, but it is recommended students write out their answers in full before submitting.
- Assignment solutions are posted within one working day of the deadline.
- Missed assignments will normally receive zero marks. Exceptions are only made under exceptional circumstances at the instructor’s discretion.
Midterm Quizzes
- Two midterm quizzes are scheduled during the term (refer to the Course Schedule for dates).
- Midterm quizzes are in-person, individual, closed-book quizzes held during class time.
- Answers to midterm quiz questions must be full written answers leading from the question’s information to the final answer (refer to posted assignment solutions for examples).
- No calculators or electronic devices are allowed during the quizzes.
- Further information about each midterm quiz will be posted on the D2L page a week before the quiz.
- If you miss a midterm quiz for any reason, the available mark (15% of the final grade) will be allocated to the final exam.
Final Exam
- The course has a final exam during the December exam period.
- The in-person, individual, closed-book exam is held during the regular class time.
