Study Notes

Henry Fayol's 14 Principles of Management

  • If tasks and related responsibilities are given to an employee by more than one manager, this may lead to confusion and possible conflicts.
  • Unity of Direction: all employees deliver the same activities that can be linked to the same objectives, and these activities must be described in a plan of action.

Unity of Direction

  • All activities must be carried out by one group that forms a team.
  • Focus areas are the efforts made by employees and coordination.

Subordination of Individual Interest

  • Personal interests are subordinate to the interest of the organization.
  • The primary focus is on organizational objectives, not individual interests.

Remuneration

  • The compensation of employees must be sufficient to keep them motivated and effective.
  • Motivation and productivity are closely related.

Degree of Centralization

  • Management and authority for the decision-making process must be properly balanced in an organization.
  • This depends on the volume and size of an organization, including its hierarchy.

Scalar Chain

  • Hierarchy presents itself in any given organization, from top management to the lowest levels.
  • There should be a clear line of authority from top to bottom.

Order

  • Employees must have the right resources at their disposal to function properly.
  • There must be social order, ensuring a safe, clean, and tidy work environment.

Equity

  • Employees must be treated kindly and equally.
  • Employees must be in the right place to do things right.

Stability of Personnel Tenure

  • The deployment and managing of personnel should be in balance with the service provided by the organization.
  • Management strives to minimize employee turnover and have the right staff in the right place.

Initiative

  • Employees should be allowed to express new ideas, encouraging involvement and interest.
  • Employee initiatives create added value for the company.

Esprit de Corps

  • Management should strive for the involvement and unity of employees.

Security Management

  • Security Risk Register: facilitates ownership and management of security risks, provides an overview of significant security risks, records the results of threat/vulnerability security risk assessment, and forms an agreed record of identified security risks.
  • Planning and Resourcing: effective planning considers targets, time frames, and the manner in which they are achieved.
  • Execution and Control Activities: the execution of a plan is predicated on all previous components in the management system.
  • Monitor and Security Reporting: based on effective two-way communication.

Types of Security Managers

  • Functional Manager: responsible for one organizational activity, focusing on technical areas of expertise, communication, planning, administration, teamwork, and self-management competencies.
  • General Manager: responsible for the operations of more complex units, overseeing the work of functional managers and guiding the organization with strategic and multicultural competencies.

Styles of Security Managers

  • The Visionary: listens to ideas and considers what they’re trying to achieve, with policies, objectives, and tasks.

Threat, Vulnerability, and Security Risk Assessment

  • Security risk assessments should consider a wide range of elements beyond physical security threats, including the operating environment, organizational profile, and strategic objectives.

Test your knowledge on principles of management in an organization including unity of direction and coordination among employees. Understand the importance of clear responsibilities and avoiding conflicts, as well as the significance of focus and unity in achieving common objectives.
