Levels of Prevention

Different stages at which preventative measures can be applied: primordial, primary, secondary, and tertiary.

Primordial Prevention

Preventing the emergence of risk factors at their very beginning; focuses on overall well-being and societal level.

Primary Prevention

Learning Outcomes

  • Learning prevention
  • Classifying levels of prevention
  • Understanding primary prevention strategies
  • Identifying intervention types
  • Defining intervention methods

Concepts of Prevention

  • Defining Health: A state of complete physical, social, and mental wellbeing, not merely the absence of disease.
  • Dimensions of Health: Physical, mental, social, spiritual, and emotional. Additional dimensions include vocational, philosophical, cultural, socioeconomic, environmental, educational, nutritional and preventive.
  • Concepts of Health: Biomedical, ecological, psychosocial, and holistic.
  • Disease and Infection: Germ Theory, Epidemiological Triad, Multifactorial Causation, Web of Causation. Communicable diseases are transmitted from the reservoir or source of infection to susceptible host. Sources/Reservoirs include human, animal and non-living.
  • Levels of Prevention: Primordial, Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary. Primordial prevention is aimed at preventing the development of risk factors in populations or countries where they have not yet appeared.
  • Main Intervention for Primordial Prevention: Individual and mass education. Primary prevention is prior to the onset of a disease, aiming to remove the possibility the disease will occur. Secondary aims to halt the progress of a disease in its early stages to prevent future complications. Tertiary aims to reduce complications and any disabilities caused by an advanced disease.

Modes of Intervention

  • Health Promotion: Enabling people to improve health control. Includes health education, environmental modifications, nutritional interventions, lifestyle, and behavioral changes.
  • Specific Protection: Immunization, appropriate nutrition, protections measures (against hazards and allergens).
  • Early Diagnosis and Treatment: Detecting disturbances to improve health outcomes and prevent further development.
  • Disability Limitation: Reducing the occurrence of impairments and preventing the transition from impairment to handicap; using appropriate treatment.
  • Rehabilitation: Using combined medical, social, educational and vocational measures to improve functional ability. Medical, vocational, social, and psychological rehabilitation.
