Newborn Care
- A positive direct Coombe's test performed on cord blood indicates antibodies coating the infant's red blood cells.
- The purpose of a Guthrie test is to assess for five rare conditions which can be successfully treated if identified early.
Postpartum Care
- Supplementary fluids for babies are unlikely to be needed if the mother is breastfeeding.
- Failure to pass meconium during the first 24 hours of life, failure to void during the first 24 hours of life, and inability to pass a rectal thermometer more than 0.5 cm into the rectum require immediate notification to medical personnel.
- Parents must register a baby by a specific deadline.
Breastfeeding
- Insufficient milk supply is commonly a conclusion based on misinterpretation of normal infant breast-feeding behaviour.
- Supplementing the baby for the first two weeks of life does not resolve insufficient milk supply quickly.
Postpartum Bleeding and Uterus Involution
- Bright red continuous blood loss per vaginum two hours after birth requires action and is not a normal physiological process.
- Persistent red lochia is a sign of possible infection.
- It usually takes around 1-2 weeks for a woman's uterus to revert to being a pelvic organ.
Postpartum Complications
- A diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis can be made if the calf is very swollen, tender, and hot, and measures larger than the other calf.
- Deep vein thrombosis is treated with anticoagulants.
- A postpartum client may start menstruating again 6-24 weeks after birth, depending on how long she breastfeeds for.
- A uterus located 4cm below the umbilicus on the second day postpartum is a result of breastfeeding.
- A blood pressure of 148/88 is a vital sign that the midwife should be concerned about.
