Study Notes

Standard Operating Guideline for Washing Dirty Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Purpose: Reduce contamination of fire stations and training centers when using extractors and/or bunker gear drying cabinets to wash/dry bunker gear.
  • Responsibility: All Toronto Fire Services (TFS) personnel are responsible. Company Officers/Captains coordinate PPE cleaning, and District Chiefs ensure adherence.
  • Guidelines:

1. General

  • Contaminated PPE must be contained according to TFS SOG G-POST before transport.

  • Company officer transporting PPE contacts the receiving officer to ensure the extractor/bunker gear drying location is operational.

  • Transporting apparatus suitability to the location is confirmed in advance, or another location is identified.

  • PPE is sorted prior to arrival at the designated location by separating liners from outer shells, and placing each item in a double-bagged, sealed container. Multiple sets of liners or outer shells can be combined for loading.

  • Crews load contaminated gear into the extractor, following manufacturer instructions (e.g., inserting the entire double-bagged gear).

  • The crew peels back the bags, keeping the gear inside during loading.

1.5 and 1.6

  • Fire station/training center Company Officer/Captain notifies the cleaning crew when the process is complete to collect and transport cleanable PPE.
  • Goal is to limit contamination within stations and facilities that house the extractors. More than one extractor location can be used to expedite the cleaning process.
  • Personnel performing cleaning must utilize nitrile gloves and N-95 masks.
