Purpose and Responsibility
- The purpose of this guideline is to provide a framework for reducing contamination to fire station/training centre personnel and facilities in Toronto Fire Services (TFS).
- All TFS personnel are responsible for following this guideline, with Company Officers/Captains coordinating the cleaning of personal protective equipment (PPE) with crew members, and District Chiefs ensuring adherence to the guideline.
Guidelines for Cleaning PPE
- Contaminated PPE must be contained before transport, as per TFS SOG G-POST.
- The Company Officer transporting the PPE must contact the Company Officer/Captain at the extractor/bunker gear drying location to confirm availability.
- PPE must be sorted before arrival at the cleaning location, separating liners from outer shells and double bagging/sealing each item.
- Multiple sets of liners or outer shells can be combined and loaded into an extractor, following manufacturer's instructions.
Cleaning Procedure
- The crew loads the soiled liners or outer shells into the extractor, inserting the entire double bag and peeling back the bags to leave the gear inside.
- A wash cycle is commenced once the sufficient load is achieved.
- Personnel performing this task must wear minimum PPE of nitrile gloves and a N-95 mask.
Post-Cleaning Procedure
- The fire station/training centre Company Officer/Captain notifies the crew associated with the gear when the cleaning process is complete.
- Clean PPE should be picked up as soon as possible and transported back to the station to hang to dry.
- The goal is to limit contamination to station crews and facilities that house the extractors.
