PPE Inspection and Maintenance
- Routine Inspection is required for all PPE, including Drag Rescue Device (DRD), hoods, helmets, gloves, and footwear.
- Inspection Points include soiling, contamination from hazardous materials or biological agents, and physical damage.
- Hood Inspection focuses on soiling, contamination, rips, tears, cuts, damaged or missing hardware, and thermal damage.
- Helmet Inspection focuses on cracks, crazing, dents, abrasions, thermal damage to the shell, damaged ear flaps, missing or damaged components in the suspension and retention system, and eye protection system issues.
- Gloves Inspection focuses on soiling, contamination, rips, tears, cuts, thermal damage, damaged inner lining, and shrinkage.
- Footwear Inspection focuses on soiling, contamination, cuts, tears, punctures, thermal damage, exposed or deformed steel toe, shank or mid sole, and leaks.
- Advanced Inspection is conducted at least twice every 12 months or whenever routine inspection indicates a problem.
- Cleaning is crucial, and three types of cleaning are defined: Routine, Advanced, and Specialized.
- Routine Cleaning involves brushing off loose debris, rinsing with gentle water spray, and using mild detergent if necessary.
- Advanced Cleaning requires specialized washing machines or manufacturer cleaning to remove heavy soils and debris.
- Specialized Cleaning is required for PPE contaminated with hazardous materials or bodily fluids, and is handled by a trained representative.
- Biannual Cleaning and Inspections are mandatory for all PPE, with the member responsible for maintenance and the Quartermaster responsible for scheduling.
- Preliminary Exposure Reduction should be carried out immediately after exiting an emergency scene to reduce contamination.
- Ensemble Exposure Reduction includes brushing debris and rinsing with low-pressure water, using a mild detergent if needed, and isolating bagged PPE.
- Replacement PPE is provided when deemed unserviceable due to normal wear and tear, accidental damage, or damage during training.
- Lost or Misplaced PPE requires immediate notification of an officer or district chief and replacement by the Quartermaster.
- Stolen PPE requires a police report, notification of the Quartermaster, and replacement by the department.
- Misuse/Destruction of PPE is strictly prohibited and may result in disciplinary action and financial responsibility for the member.
- Policy Applicability emphasizes that it is for internal use only and does not change a member's legal duties or civil liability.
