Module 2: Introduction
- The module covers knowledge, skills, and attitudes in efficient and effective feeds and feeding management of chicken
- It serves to develop learners with potential in feeds and feeding management of chicken
Learning Competencies
- Upon completion, learners should be able to feed birds properly
- Identify essential nutrients needed by chicken
- Differentiate feed types appropriate for chicken at different growth stages
- Identify/classify feed ingredients used in formulating layer and broiler rations
Diagnostic/Pre-assessment
- Key expenses in broiler production (chick feed, feeds, labor)
- Primary function of feeds (growth, development, maintenance, reproduction)
- Primary function of nutrients (heat, energy, growth, maintenance)
- The importance of a balanced ration for maximum efficiency
Lesson 1: Purposes of Feeding Chicken
- Poultry birds need essential nutrients for growth, body maintenance, and egg production
- Important nutrients include energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals
- Nutrients must be supplied in the right quality, quantity, or in a balanced ration for proper growth and production
- Poultry raising expenses are largely dominated by feed costs
Lesson 2: Feed Ingredients and Formulating Ration for Chicken
- Sources of Energy: Yellow corn is a good feed source, high in energy and low in fiber. Rice bran is a palatable feed type
- Sources of Protein: Corn gluten feed (combination of corn gluten and corn bran), soybeans oilmeal (high and low protein), ipil-ipil leaf meal, copra meal, fishmeal, shrimp meal, and meat and bone meal
- Forms of Feed: Mash, crumble, pellet
- Kinds of Poultry Feeds: Pre-starter/chick booster, starter, grower, finisher, etc.
Minerals, Vitamins, and Fats
- Important mineral elements include calcium, phosphorus, chlorine, potassium, etc.
- Vitamins are essential for bodily functions and are either fat-soluble or water-soluble
- Fats provide energy and support bodily functions
Ration Formulation
- Pearson Square Method is used for determining the correct proportions of feed ingredients
- The method is used to maintain the correct protein content in the ration
- Formulas can be determined according to the needs of the different chicken growth stages
- Trial and error method is a practical method for smaller scale farming
Feeding Guide for General Flock
- Different feeds are required based on age and stage of development of the chicken (broiler and layers)
