Duties of Letter Box Peon
- Letter box peons are required to know the hours of letter-box clearance and mail despatch and delivery at the post office.
- They must clear letter-boxes in their beats and report any damage or defects to the postmaster.
- Before starting their rounds, they receive from the postmaster:
- Keys of letter-boxes
- Changeable hour plates (if available)
- A bag for collecting articles found in letter-boxes
- After clearing the last letter-box, they must return to the post office without delay and hand over:
- Keys of letter-boxes
- Hour-plates
- Bag
- Keys and hour-plates are kept in the custody of the postmaster or responsible Assistant and are only given to letter-box attendants during designated hours.
Electronic Clearance and Monitoring
- Electronic clearance and monitoring of letter boxes are done through Nanyatha software.
- The software helps upload data about:
- Location of letter boxes
- Date and time of clearance
- Number of letters
- Person who cleared the letter box
- LB attendants scan the barcode inside the letter box using an android application and enter the number of cleared letters.
- The application sends details to the central server through GPRS, which validates GPS coordinates and updates clearance information.
Additional Employment
- Letter box attendants may be employed to convey mails to and from town sub or branch offices.
- They may also be utilized as packers.
