Animal Bite Incidents

Handling Animal Bite Incidents
- Citizens reporting animal concerns will be referred to the 3-1-1 Action Center
- Sworn members will be dispatched on animal bite incidents when:
- Related to an assault
- Injury is serious in nature
- Person is in danger of an attack
- Communications Unit personnel will advise the Animal Health and Public Safety supervisor if an animal has bitten someone
Procedures for Sworn Members
- Arrange necessary medical assistance for the victim
- Attempt to contain the animal or maintain visual contact until the Animal Health and Public Safety employee arrives
- Refer to the emergency euthanasia and disposal guidelines in the "Firearms Procedures" directive when destroying a distressed and/or injured animal that presents a danger to the public
- Complete the report(s), if applicable (e.g., Animal Euthanasia Report)
- Leave the animal with the owner when possible, otherwise notify the Animal Health and Public Safety supervisor for removal
