Handling Animal Bite Incidents

  • Citizens reporting animal concerns will be referred to the 3-1-1 Action Center
  • Sworn members will be dispatched on animal bite incidents when:
    • Related to an assault
    • Injury is serious in nature
    • Person is in danger of an attack
  • Communications Unit personnel will advise the Animal Health and Public Safety supervisor if an animal has bitten someone

Procedures for Sworn Members

  • Arrange necessary medical assistance for the victim
  • Attempt to contain the animal or maintain visual contact until the Animal Health and Public Safety employee arrives
  • Refer to the emergency euthanasia and disposal guidelines in the "Firearms Procedures" directive when destroying a distressed and/or injured animal that presents a danger to the public
  • Complete the report(s), if applicable (e.g., Animal Euthanasia Report)
  • Leave the animal with the owner when possible, otherwise notify the Animal Health and Public Safety supervisor for removal

    • Owner is not present, unknown, or unable to take control of the animal
