    Pneumonia Symptoms

    • Adults: Productive cough, fever with chills, shortness of breath, sharp chest pain, increased breathing rate. Confusion may be prominent in elderly.

    • Children (<5 years): Fever, cough, fast or difficult breathing. Fever is not always present in severe cases, malnutrition, or in elderly. Cough may be absent in infants (<2 months).

    • More severe signs in children: Blue-tinged skin, reluctance to drink, convulsions, persistent vomiting, extreme temperatures, reduced consciousness.

    Specific Pneumonia Symptoms

    • Legionella: Abdominal pain, diarrhea, confusion.

    • Streptococcus pneumoniae: Rusty-colored sputum.

    • Klebsiella: Bloody sputum ("currant jelly").

    • Mycoplasma pneumoniae: Swollen neck lymph nodes, joint pain, middle ear infection.

    • Viral pneumonia: Wheezing more common than in bacterial pneumonia.

    • Bloody sputum (hemoptysis): Also seen in tuberculosis, Gram-negative pneumonia, lung abscesses and acute bronchitis

    Historical Classification

    • Historically, pneumonia was categorized as "typical" or "atypical" based on symptoms.
    • There is no clear link between presentation and cause; this distinction is no longer emphasized.
