Life Processes Overview
Life is composed of various activities and functions called life processes. These processes ensure survival and growth by maintaining homeostasis within an organism and allowing it to adapt to its environment. They can broadly be categorized into two main types: physiological and ecological processes. Physiological processes involve all internal activity of an individual such as metabolism, respiration, excretion, circulation, absorption, assimilation, secretion, and reproduction. Ecological processes, on the other hand, relate to how individuals interact with their external world, including behavioral interactions among members of the same species, competition for resources, predation, mutualisms, coevolution, population fluctuations, community dynamics, ecosystem formation, and succession. Both categories of processes require energy input from food sources to sustain them and allow living things to carry out these vital tasks.
Transport In Plants
One particularly important life process is transport, which plays a crucial role in plant functions. Transport in plants involves the movement of water and nutrients throughout the plant body. There are four main pathways of transportation in plants:

Transpirational Stream: This refers to the flow of water through the stomata, opening pores on leaves, upwards towards the roots, driven by the evaporation of water from the leaf surface. It helps regulate temperature, stabilize cellular pH levels, maintain turgor pressure, and hold the root system open so oxygen and nutrient uptake continue uninterrupted.

Root Pressure Flow: Water absorbed passively across the root's outer layers enters xylem vessels containing air spaces. As new water flows in, this causes old water to move upward against gravity through the entire vascular column, nourishing all parts of the plant.

Gravitational Force Movement in Xylem Vessels: Due to cohesive forces between water molecules and capillary action, water moves up the stem under the force of gravity. This ensures vertical distribution of water and nutrients throughout the plant. While pure water rises easily due to low density and high tensile strength, nutrients dissolved in water create osmotic suctions that assist water ascent.

Cohesion-Tension Theory: Plants have specialized structures known as tracheids and vessel elements that form tubes filled with fluid. On the lower end of each tube, there is a pit where the liquid is sucked out. At the top ends of these tubes, there is another pit where water flows back down, creating a continuous cycle of liquid transfer. This mechanism relies heavily on gravitational pull and cohesion between water particles. If any part of the tube collapses or becomes blocked, pressure builds up until blockage is removed.
These transport mechanisms work together to deliver essential materials like water and minerals to every cell in a plant while ensuring waste removal and allowing the plant to respond effectively to environmental changes.
