Study Notes
Plant Tissue
- Plant growth occurs only in specific regions called meristematic tissue.
- Meristematic tissue is found at the apex of stems and roots, in lateral buds, and at the base of leaves.
- There are three main types of meristematic tissue: apical meristem, lateral meristem, and intercalary meristem.
- Apical meristem is responsible for increasing the length of stems and roots.
- Lateral meristem is responsible for increasing the girth (width) of stems and roots.
- Intercalary meristem is responsible for increasing the length of internodes (sections between nodes on a stem).
- Permanent tissue is formed from meristematic tissue that has lost its ability to divide.
- Permanent tissue is categorized into three major types: parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma.
Parenchyma Tissue
- Parenchyma tissue is composed of living cells that are loosely packed with large intercellular spaces.
- Parenchyma tissue provides support and storage for the plant.
- Chloroplasts are present in parenchyma tissue, allowing for photosynthesis.
- Aerenchyma is a specialized type of parenchyma tissue found in aquatic plants that aids in buoyancy.
Collenchyma Tissue
- Collenchyma tissue is composed of elongated living cells with thickened cell walls made of cellulose and pectin.
- Collenchyma tissue provides mechanical support and flexibility to the plant, particularly in stems and leaves.
Sclerenchyma Tissue
- Sclerenchyma tissue is composed of long, dead cells with thick, lignified cell walls.
- Sclerenchyma tissue provides structural support and rigidity to the plant, often found in vascular tissues, stems, veins, and leaves.
Complex Permanent Tissues
- Complex permanent tissue, like xylem and phloem, are responsible for the transport of water, minerals, and soluble substances throughout the plant.
Xylem
- Xylem tissue transports water and dissolved minerals upwards from the roots to the rest of the plant.
- Xylem is composed of tracheids, vessels, fibers, and xylem parenchyma.
- Xylem transports substances unidirectionally.
Phloem
- Phloem tissue transports sugars (produced by photosynthesis) and other organic compounds throughout the plant.
- Phloem is composed of sieve tubes, companion cells, phloem fibers, and phloem parenchyma.
- Phloem transport can occur in both directions, depending on the direction of nutrient flow.
Animal Tissue
- Animal tissue is composed of cells that are organized into specialized groups with specific functions.
- There are four main types of animal tissue: epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscular tissue, and nervous tissue.
Epithelial Tissue
- Epithelial tissue covers the surfaces of the body, lining internal cavities and organs.
- Epithelial tissue provides protection, absorption, secretion, and excretion.
- Blood is considered a type of connective tissue, composed of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
- Blood transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body.
Connective Tissue
- Connective tissue provides support, binds tissues together, and helps to transport substances.
- Connective tissue is composed of cells embedded in a matrix, which can be liquid, solid, or semi-solid.
- Examples of connective tissue include bone, cartilage, blood, ligaments, tendons, and adipose tissue.
- Bone provides support and protection, while cartilage provides cushioning and flexibility.
- Ligaments connect bones to other bones, while tendons connect muscles to bones.
- Adipose tissue stores fat and acts as an insulator.
Muscular Tissue
- Muscular tissue is responsible for movement.
- Muscular tissue is composed of elongated cells called muscle fibers that contain contractile proteins.
- There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle.
- Skeletal muscle is attached to bones and is voluntary, meaning we can consciously control its movement.
- Smooth muscle is found in the walls of internal organs and blood vessels and is involuntary, meaning we cannot consciously control its movement.
- Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart and is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. It is involuntary.
Nervous Tissue
- Nervous tissue is responsible for coordinating and controlling bodily functions and communication between different parts of the body.
- Nervous tissue is composed of specialized cells called neurons, which transmit electrical impulses.
- Each neuron consists of a cell body, dendrites, and an axon.
- Dendrites receive impulses, while the axon transmits impulses to other neurons, muscles, or glands.
