Study Notes
Plant Disease Classification
- Plant diseases are categorized as biotic (infectious) or abiotic (non-infectious).
- Biotic diseases are caused by pathogens, living organisms capable of infecting and replicating within the plant.
- Abiotic diseases result from environmental factors like soil or atmospheric conditions, or nutrient imbalances.
Biotic Plant Diseases
- Caused by specific pathogenic organisms such as fungi, bacteria, mycoplasmas, viruses, viroids, nematodes, or parasitic plants.
- Pathogens reproduce within or on the host plant.
- Pathogens can spread readily from one plant to another.
Abiotic Plant Diseases
- Caused by unfavourable growing conditions, such as soil or atmospheric conditions, and mineral deficiencies or excesses.
- Non-infectious factors are not organisms and, therefore, cannot be transmitted.
Plant Pathology
- The study of plant diseases is called plant pathology.
