Study Notes
Phospholipid Structure
- A phospholipid has a polar phosphate head group, two fatty acid chains, and a glycerol backbone.
- Fatty acid is a carboxylic acid attached to a long carbon chain (R-group).
- Carboxylic acid has a double-bonded O and a hydroxyl group.
- Glycerol backbone is a basic structure with three carbons attached to three hydroxyl groups.
- Phosphate group has a phosphorus and four oxygens attached to it.
Phospholipid Molecule
- A phospholipid molecule has two fatty acid chains attached to glycerol through ester bonds, and a phosphate group attached to glycerol through another ester bond.
- One of the negative oxygens is replaced with a hydroxyl group, forming an alcohol group.
- Phospholipids can occur in various forms, bonding with different molecules to produce a diverse set of phospholipids.
Types of Phospholipids
- Phospholipids can bond with molecules like serine, choline, ethanolomine, inositol, and glycerol to form different types of phospholipids.
- Examples of phospholipids include phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolomine, phosphatidylinositol, and diphosphatidylgylcerol (cardiolipin).
Fatty Acid Chains
- The R-group of a fatty acid is made up of a long chain of carbons.
- These carbons can form double bonds with each other, occurring in cis and trans forms.
- Cis bonds create a kink in the fatty acid chain, while trans bonds create a straight chain.
- This affects the fluidity of a cell membrane.
