Freedom and Responsibility
- Freedom is a misunderstood concept.
- Ancestors fought for freedom, yet it is not well understood by today's generation.
- Freedom is associated with the ability to do whatever one wants.
- The concept of freedom is vast.
- Some believe freedom is the ability to do anything, regardless of consequences.
- Others believe freedom is the ability to act towards what is good.
- Some believe freedom does not exist.
- Natural law governs choices.
Human Actions vs Acts of Man
- Human Act: An act that is performed only by a human being, and is thus proper to man.
- A human act is voluntary, meaning it is under the control of the will.
- A voluntary act is continued by the will, an act of love, or choice or by another human power that is motivated by the will.
- The human power can be by intellect or by reasoning or emotion.
Acts of Man
- Acts that are shared by humans and other animals.
- Involuntary, instinctive, and unintentional.
- Examples include: looking, dreaming, daydreaming, hearing, listening, walking, and sleepwalking.
Aristotle's Distinction of Voluntary and Involuntary Actions
- Voluntary Actions: These actions originate from the individual acting with knowledge of the situation.
- Voluntary actions are performed from will and reason.
- Related to Compulsion: Mixed actions are considered more voluntary if the desire and choice have been performed. They are considered involuntary if they have considered alternatives.
- Example: Performing a crime under duress.
- Involuntary Actions: Actions done under force or coercion, or ignorance in which the actor doesn't understand the effect and feels remorse.
- Under compulsion: Actions that are beyond the control of the actor and do not contribute to the action.
- Example: Kidnapping.
- Through Ignorance of Particular Circumstances: Actions done through ignorance of particular circumstances.
- Example: Stealing, mistaken gunfire.
Human Freedom and Obligation
- Freedom and obligation are two indispensable conditions for morality to occur.
- Freedom is present when one chooses a course of action and takes responsibility for its consequences.
- This is anchored in the individual's moral and rational capacity to discern right from wrong.
- Freedom exists in making choices within the realm of morality.
- This idea can be summarized by the Filipino saying, "Buntot mo, hila mo!"
Moral Dilemmas
- Moral dilemmas involve a conflict between two or more actions, where all actions potentially have moral reasons.
- No matter the choice, someone will experience suffering or negative outcomes.
- The book lists several examples (Unfaithful Friend, Difficult Choice, Office Theft, Midnight Death, Get Rich, Telling a Secret, The Life Boat, Sarcastic Friend, Third Strike, Reward a Job Well Done).
Specific Moral Dilemmas (Examples)
Detailed descriptions of the dilemmas, including options for decision-making.
Individual Performance Task and Group Task
- Instructions for individual and group tasks for further study and application of concepts.

- These are normative answers based on values.
- Practical Choice: Choices borne from psychological and emotional considerations. These choices are in response to the actual situation, taking into account emotions and personal situations which influence decisions.
Morality
- Morality is principles that define the distinction between right and wrong.
- Moral dilemmas are situations where an individual must make a decision with opposing moral reasons or right and wrong outcomes.
