Pharmacy Institution Overview

Institutional Pharmacy

• Refers to pharmacies in institutions, organizations, corporations, and agencies that provide pharmaceutical services exclusively to employees and their dependents.
• Examples: Philippine Airlines, Supreme Court of the Philippines, Social Security System

Old – Industrial Pharmacist Association of the Philippines (IPAP)

• Established in 2004 to represent pharmacists in industrial accounts by drug companies and distributors.
• Logo:
  • Bowl of Hygeia symbolizes the pharmacy profession.
  • Buildings represent institutions.
  • Two doves/two hands represent an open hand for service with purity of intentions.

Philippine Airlines (PAL)

• Oldest running airline in the Philippines (82 years).
• Primarily engaged in air transport of passengers and cargo within and between the Philippines and international destinations.
• Recognized as the "national flag carrier" by R.A. 2232.
• Has a subsidiary, Air Philippines Corporation, indirectly acquired through Zuma Holdings Management Corporation in 2017.
• Operates four hub airports: Manila, Cebu, Clark, and Davao.
• Serves 32 domestic destinations, 41 points in Asia, Australia/Oceania, Middle East, Europe, and North America.

Functions and Responsibilities of the Pharmacist in PAL

• Dispensing of medicines.
• Providing necessary drug information, possible drug interactions, and untoward reactions to patients.
• Replenishment of First Aid Kit (FAK) and Emergency Medical Kit (EMK).
• Preparing and sending move orders for satellite clinics.
• Stocks monitoring.
• Receiving of deliveries.
• Processing of charged invoices for submission to employee accounts, PDMP.

Supreme Court of the Philippines

• Established in 1901 as the progeny of the tribunal established by Act No. 136.
• Composed of a Chief Justice and 14 Associate Justices.
• Members are appointed by the President from a list prepared by the Judicial and Bar Council.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Pharmacist in SC

• In charge of the Pharmacy Section of SC Clinic Pharmacy.
• Monitors the latest updates required by the government agency (Department of Health) regarding policy and procurement of medicines.
• Provides the Philippine National Drug Formulary for all concerned staff in Medical Services.
• Prepares the list of medicines needed in the procurement plan.

SC MDS Pharmacy Policy

• Strictly implements the NO PATIENT, NO MEDICINE POLICY, except under extenuating circumstances.
• Strictly implements the NO Prescription, No MEDICINE Policy.
• Substitution of medicines is allowed only upon instructions of the prescribing doctor and with the consent of the patient.
• Doubling of medicine dosage forms is not allowed.
• Refill of medicine BY REPRESENTATIVE is NOT allowed, except under extenuating circumstances.

Social Security System

• Provides social justice through savings and ensures meaningful social security protection to members and their beneficiaries.
• Has a Pharmacy and Benefit Control division that:
  • Assures that its inventory of medicines is well-stocked and maintained properly.
  • Monitors the inventory purchased medicines by recording invoice, unit cost, and expiration date.
  • Ensures compliance to government regulatory requirements as to LTO and deregulated license (S1) / Maintenance of the Prescription Book and Opium Additional Book.
