Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Part of the nervous system connecting CNS to limbs and organs.
Spinal Nerves
Spinal Nerves
31 pairs of nerves that exit the spinal cord carrying sensory and motor messages.
Cranial Nerves
Cranial Nerves
12 pairs of nerves arising from the brain stem, connecting sensory organs.

Study Notes
Peripheral Nervous System
- Composed of 31 pairs of spinal nerves
- Spinal nerves carry both sensory and motor messages
- 12 pairs of cranial nerves originate in the brain stem
- Cranial nerves conduct impulses to and from sensory organs
- Nerves can be sensory, motor, or mixed
- Spinal nerves and cranial nerves are part of the PNS
Reflex System
- Includes spinal, deep tendon, and superficial reflexes
- Also includes protective responses
Nerve Cells (Neurons)
- Send information
- Involved in involuntary functions regulation
Functions of the PNS
- Connects the CNS to organs, limbs, and skin
- Carries sensory and motor information to/from the CNS
- Allows brain and spinal cord to receive and send information to other areas of the body
- Regulates involuntary functions
- The somatic nervous system, controls voluntary movement
- The autonomic nervous system controls internal environment without conscious intervention
- The sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for action (eye pupils dilate, bronchial tubes dilate, heart rate and strength increase) and the liver releases glucose.
