Study Notes
Renal Function and Blood Parameters
- BUN: Normal range 5-18 mg/dL. Elevated levels may indicate renal disease, dehydration, hemorrhage, increased protein intake, or corticosteroid therapy.
- Creatinine (Infant): Normal range 0.2-0.4 mg/dL, indicating renal function.
- Creatinine (Child): Normal range 0.3-0.7 mg/dL, indicating renal function.
- Creatinine (Teen): Normal range 0.5-1.0 mg/dL, indicating renal function.
Blood Cell Values
- Reticulocytes: Normal range 0.5-1.5%. Represents newly formed red blood cells (RBCs).
- Platelets: Normal range 150,000-400,000. Known as thrombocytes; low levels can cause petechiae.
- Hemoglobin: Normal range 11.5-15.5 g/dL. Levels under range indicate anemia.
- Hematocrit: Normal range 35-45%. Represents the proportion of blood volume occupied by red cells.
- Absolute Neutrophil Count: Should be >1000 cells/mL, important in assessing infection response.
White Blood Cell (WBC) Differentials
- Lymphocytes: Comprise 25-33% of WBCs; elevated in viral infections.
- Monocytes: Make up 3-7% of WBCs; increased during recovery from infections.
- Basophils: Constitute 0.075% of WBCs; involved in hypersensitivity reactions.
- Eosinophils: Account for 1-3% of WBCs; elevated levels are associated with allergic and parasitic infections.
- Bands: Represent 3-5% of WBCs; immature neutrophils that increase in response to bacterial infections. A left shift indicates a need for further evaluation.
- Neutrophils: Comprise 54-62% of WBCs; elevated levels are common in bacterial and early viral infections.
- Leukocytes: Normal range 4,500-13,500 cells/mL; crucial for inflammation and immunity.
Blood Sugar Levels
- Normal Blood Sugar: Ranges from 70-105 mg/dL.
- Hypoglycemia: Defined as blood sugar levels below 250 mg/dL, indicating low glucose levels.
- Glycosylated Hemoglobin: Normal range 4-6%; levels at 7.5% indicate diabetes mellitus (DM).
Mean Corpuscular Volume
- Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV): Normal range is 77-95 fL, indicating average red blood cell size.
