  • Purpose: To ensure patients' rights and responsibilities are observed, and patients/families/staff are aware of them.

    • Patient Rights: Privileges and rights of patients during their stay.

  • Policy: Center protects patient welfare and dignity by adopting patient rights and responsibilities.
    • Patients receive information on rights & responsibilities. If unable to understand, family member receives information.
    • Staff orientation on rights and responsibilities occurs.
    • Patient/family education is documented.
    • Rights and responsibilities are explained based on patient understanding/education level in Arabic or English, with efforts to aid understanding for non-native speakers.
  • Procedures:
    • Patient Rights:
      • Access to/transfer of care, continuity of care, including right to desired treatment/services; transfer; a patient may leave, even against medical advice); information needed for self-care, accurate and honest information about their illness, proposed treatment(s), potential benefits and complications, treatment success likelihood, and physician/staff names; transfer to another center; consent; the right to refuse treatment (informed of consequences); privacy & confidentiality of medical records; patient outcomes, including unexpected ones will be communicated; pain management is an important element of patient care; informed consent (patients receive necessary information before procedures); refusal of treatment (right to refuse, informed consequences); privacy and confidentiality (of protected health information); patient outcomes, including treatment results; pain assessment and management; patient complaints are received, documented, and responded to; security for patient safety; refusal of treatment with disclosure of medical consequences

    • Patient/Family Responsibilities:
      • Adherence to patient guidelines. Accurate and complete health information provision. Following treatment plans; acceptance of responsibility for actions if treatment is refused or instructions are not followed; notification of concerns to physician, nurses, or social workers; consideration for other patients and staff; respect for center property; signing of informed consent forms; awareness of high standards of care and hospitality (cooperation with standards).
  • Responsibilities:
    • Center Director: Ensures staff compliance.
    • Department Heads: Confirm staff awareness and policy compliance.
    • Patient Experience Coordinator: Monitors and implements the policy using daily staff rounds and patient feedback / system. Also manages and monitors patient complaint systems.
    • All Center Staff: Adherence to patients' rights and responsibilities is the responsibility of all staff.
    • Patient complaints are handled via a system that receives, documents, and addresses complaints (written, verbal and telephone complaints). Individuals who make complaints receive notification on the outcome of the inquiry/investigation. This notification occurs after the investigation.
