Part-Time Employment Program

  • The Part-Time Employment Program allows qualified part-time members to fill vacant budgeted full-time positions temporarily or permanently.
  • The program offers flexibility in work hours, such as two part-time members working four hours daily to fill an eight-hour position.
  • Part-time members can work on an "as-needed" basis for two or three eight-hour shifts each week in a vacant position.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Regular full-time members are not eligible to participate in the Part-Time Employment Program while employed in a full-time status.
  • Part-time members must meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the position assigned.
  • Part-time members must be at least 17 years of age and successfully complete a background investigation.
  • They must also respond to the Personnel Records Section on the first day of employment and maintain possession of department-issued building access cards and/or keys.

Work Hours and Compensation

  • Hours of work will be determined by the supervisor or commander in the element of assignment.
  • Part-time members will not be scheduled or permitted to work:
    • Prior to reporting to the assigned element.
    • More than 24 hours in a seven-day work week, averaged over a 28-day work period.
    • Overtime, or in excess of 999 hours in a calendar year.
  • Part-time members' starting pay rate will be determined by the Director of Human Resources.

Summer Intern Employment Program

  • The Summer Intern Employment Program provides an opportunity for department elements to secure temporary personnel during the summer months.
  • An applicant for summer employment must have graduated from high school or obtained a GED and be currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution.
  • The summer intern will be compensated at a pay rate determined by the Chief of Police and will not work on a holiday or receive holiday pay.
  • They will not work in excess of the Summer Employment Program's maximum number of hours, which are determined annually by the Chief of Police.
  • They will not operate any department-owned vehicle, ATV, or motorcycle.

Requesting Summer Interns

  • To request the assignment of a summer intern, the element supervisor or commander must submit a memorandum through their chain of command to the Chief of Police for approval, with a copy to the Human Resources Division and Financial Services Division, indicating:
    • The element of assignment.
    • The position for which a summer intern is requested.
    • The number of hours to be worked.
    • The duration of the assignment, if applicable.
    • The description of duties/responsibilities, educational, and skill requirements for the applicable position.
