Study Notes
Parasympathetic Nervous System
- Part of the autonomic nervous system
- Deals with anabolic activities
- Leads to conservation of body energy
- Also known as the cranio-sacral division
Divisions of the Parasympathetic Nervous System
-
Cranial outflow:
- Parasympathetic fibers are found in cranial nerves III (oculomotor), VII (facial), IX (glossopharyngeal), and X (vagus).
-
Sacral outflow:
- Parasympathetic fibers originate from segments 2, 3, and 4 of the sacral spinal cord.
Oculomotor Nerve (III)
- Originates from the Edinger-Westphal nucleus in the midbrain
- Preganglionic fibers synapse in the ciliary ganglion
- Postganglionic fibers travel in short ciliary nerves
- Functions:
- Constriction of the pupil (miosis): Contraction of the constrictor pupillae muscle.
- Focusing the eye (accommodation): Contraction of the ciliary muscle, leading to relaxation of suspensory ligaments and increased lens convexity.
Facial Nerve (VII)
- Supplies the lacrimal, nasal, and submandibular salivary glands.
- Preganglionic fibers originate in the superior salivatory nucleus in the pons.
- Fibers for lacrimal and nasal glands synapse in the sphenopalatine ganglion.
- Fibers for submandibular glands synapse in the submandibular ganglion.
- Functions:
- True secretion (large volume, watery saliva, less enzyme content)
- Vasodilation in the salivary glands
Glossopharyngeal Nerve (IX)
- Supplies the parotid salivary gland
- Preganglionic fibers originate in the inferior salivatory nucleus in the medulla
- Synapse in the otic ganglion
- Functions:
- True secretion (large volume, watery saliva, less enzyme content)
- Vasodilation of blood vessels

Description
Overview of the parasympathetic nervous system, its cranial and sacral divisions, and the functions of the oculomotor nerve (III), including pupil constriction and eye focusing. The system conserves body energy and is also known as the cranio-sacral division.
