    Study Notes

    Paramedic System Entry

    • The purpose of the Standard Operating Guidelines (SOG) is to define the steps required for paramedics to gain full NWC EMSS ALS privileges from another EMS system, outside of Illinois, or former NWC EMSS system members who left in good standing.

    Policy

    • Paramedics holding a valid, current paramedic license from another EMS system must complete the system entry process per Northwest Community Hospital EMS Policy E-3.
    • Probationary Firefighter/Paramedics (PFF/PM) will complete a minimum of 10 full duty days assigned to an ambulance.
    • PFF/PM will be assigned a preceptor approved by the EMS Officer for ride time, which includes ambulance orientation, training on 12-lead ECG, map book, and area familiarization, and an “in-field” evaluation of paramedic skills.

    Procedure

    • The EMS Officer or designee will submit the completed “System Entry Authorization Form” to the NWC EMSS office.
    • The PFF/PM will contact the NWC EMSS office secretary to open a file.
    • The PFF/PM will complete the SOP and Policy Manual Self-assessments.
    • The PFF/PM will complete the NWC EMSS written test, consisting of five modules.
    • Upon completion, the PFF/PM will be granted temporary ALS privileges.
    • The PFF/PM will complete the NWC EMSS skills labs, concurrent with the Hoffman Estates EMS Field Team Leader program.

Hoffman Estates EMS Field Team Leader Program

    • The PFF/PM will serve as the Team Leader on a minimum of 15 runs (10 ALS) and demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate clinical information relative to the role of an entry-level paramedic in the NWC EMSS.
    • The PFF/PM will perform patient assessments on 5 ALS calls with varying natures of complaint.
    • The PFF/PM will perform system-approved ALS interventions demonstrating technical proficiency necessary to fulfill the role of an entry-level paramedic in the NWC EMSS.
    • The PFF/PM will correctly apply the ECG leads and interpret rhythm and/or acute changes on a 12-lead ECG for 5 live patients of various age groups.
    • The PFF/PM will document each submitted run on the electronic patient care report in accordance with principles of medical documentation.
    • The PFF/PM will accurately call in the patient report on 15 (10 ALS) runs using the appropriate communication methods and technology.

    Meeting and Evaluation

    • Upon completion of the Hoffman Estates EMS Field Team Leader program, a meeting will be held involving the Battalion Chief-Training/Safety, EMS Officer, Paramedic Preceptor(s), and the PFF/PM to review progress.
    • The meeting will determine if the Probationary Firefighter/Paramedic has successfully met all the requirements as determined by the NWC EMSS or if further training is deemed necessary.
