Purpose and Authority

- Authorized by the Fire Rescue Administrator.
Response Protocol
- Communication Center may supply hydrant availability and location.
- First arriving unit can request additional units based on:
- Visible or reported conditions.
- Knowledge of the roadway.
- Water supply availability.
- Other unusual circumstances.
Tactical Considerations for Vehicle Fires
- Position units to:
- Block the Safe Work Area from traffic and hazards.
- Stay upwind when possible.
- If smoke is low and upstream of traffic, prioritize blocking for a safe work area.
- Fire Rescue personnel should approach vehicle fires from a 45-degree angle from the sides, avoiding the front or rear.
- Vehicle hoods, airbags, and hatchbacks may contain compressed cylinders, posing injury risks.
- Use a minimum of 1 ¾” pre-connected hose line flowing at least 100 GPM for fire attack.
- Disconnect or cut both positive and negative battery cables.
- Conduct a thorough search of the entire vehicle for potential victims.

- Establish Incident Command and manage until transfer or termination.
- Provide an Arrival Report.
Incident Command
- Manage the scene and communicate benchmarks.
- Assign an Incident Safety Officer.
- Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn by personnel.
- Implement personnel accountability.
- Enforce the two-in/two-out rule for entry into large vehicles (e.g., 18-wheel trailers).
- Assign personnel for patient assessment and consider requesting a Fire Investigator.
