Oxidation Numbers
- Pure elements have an oxidation number of 0.
- Monatomic ions have an oxidation number equal to their charge.
- Fluorine's oxidation number is always -1 in compounds.
- Oxygen's oxidation number is -2, except in peroxides (-1) or when combined with fluorine (+1 or +2).
- Hydrogen's oxidation number is +1, except when combined with a metal (-1).
- Group 1 elements are +1, Group 2 elements are +2, and aluminum is +3 in compounds.
- The sum of oxidation numbers in a neutral compound is 0.
- The sum of oxidation numbers in a polyatomic ion equals the ion's charge.
