Sunnah and Hadith Overview
- Sunnah: Refers to the Prophet's (S.A.W) practices, sayings, and tacit approvals.
- Hadith: The reported and recorded form of Sunnah. Also known as Khabar.
Literal Meaning
- Sunnah: individual practice, custom of society, or tradition of many generations
- Hadith: a saying, a piece of information
Technical Meaning
- Sunnah:
- Sayings of the Prophet (S.A.W)
- Practices of the Prophet (S.A.W)
- Tacit approvals of the Prophet (S.A.W)
- Hadith: The reported and recorded form of Sunnah.
Arguments for Authenticity
- Deductive: Obeying Allah and the Messenger leads to mercy. This means that Allah preserves and revealed the Qur'an and that is preserved. The hadith are a reminder of the same.
- Inductive: Care was taken to preserve authentic hadith through historical record by successive generations of the Muslim Ummah.
Compilation Periods
- Age of the Prophet (S.A.W) and companions: Memorization, discussion, practice, writing (by Ali, Abdullah Ibn Amr ibn Al-Aas, Abu Hurairah)
- Age of Tabi'een and Tabi' Tabi'een: Compilation by Hassan al-Basri, Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, Hammam Ibn Munabbih (student of Abu Hurairah R.A), Al-Mu'atta of Imam Malik, Musnad of Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal.
- Third Century Hijri (Golden Period): Collection of six authentic books: Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawood, Sunan Nisaai, Jami' Tirmizi, Sunan Ibn Majah (also known as The Six Authentic Books).
Classification of Hadith (by number of narrators)
- Mutawatir: Narrated by a large number of reliable individuals at each stage that makes fabrication impossible.
- Two Types:
- Verbal Mutawatir: Examples include the last sermon of Prophet (S.A.W) and saying "Whoever invents a lie and attributes it..."
- Conceptual Mutawatir: Related to daily prayers, punishment in grave
- Two Types:
- Wahid: A hadith that is not mutawatir.
- Further Classification:
- Mashhur: Narrated by at least three narrators at each stage of narration
- Azeez: Narrated by at least two narrators at each stage of narration
- Ghareeb: Narrated by at least one narrator at each stage of narration
- Further Classification:
Two Parts of Hadith
- Sanad: Â Chain of Narration
- Matan: Text of Hadith
Conditions for Khabar Wahid Hadith
- Sanad (Chain): Complete, without flaws, narrators with good character & memory
- Matan (Text): Supported by evidence from the Quran & other ahadith, actual facts
Classification of Hadith (by quality)
- Sahih: Authentic (meets all criteria for evaluation)
- Hassan: Good (meets most criteria but one narrator lacks good memory)
- Zaeef: Weak (broken chain, narrator who committed sin)
- Mawzu: Fabricated (wrongly attributed to the Prophet)
Important Categories
- Only Sahih and Hassan accepted in important religious matters
- Za'eef can be used as supportive information, not the main source.
