What are the two categories of lymphoid structures?

Primary and secondary lymphoid structures

Where does the development of all blood formed elements and B-lymphocyte maturation take place?

Red bone marrow

In which secondary lymphoid structure does the immune response get initiated against a substance in the blood, while also removing aged erythrocytes and platelets?

Spleen

Where can you find clusters of lymphoid nodules within the oral cavity and pharynx to protect against inhaled and ingested substances?

Tonsils

Which lymphoid structure, located near the left upper quadrant of the abdomen, wraps partially around the stomach and functions by filtering blood?

Spleen

Study Notes

Lymphoid Structures

  • Lymphoid structures are categorized as either primary or secondary lymphoid structures.
  • Primary lymphoid structures are involved in the formation and maturation of lymphocytes.
  • Secondary lymphoid structures are not involved in lymphocyte formation, but instead house lymphocytes and other immune cells following their formation.

Primary Lymphoid Structures

  • Red bone marrow:
    • Located in the spongy bone of selected bones
    • Function: development of all blood-formed elements; site of B-lymphocyte maturation
  • Thymus:
    • Located in the superior mediastinum (in adults) and anterior and superior mediastinum (in children)
    • Function: site of T-lymphocyte maturation and differentiation

Secondary Lymphoid Structures

  • Lymph nodes:
    • Located along the length of lymphatic vessels; clusters in axillary, inguinal, and cervical regions
    • Function: filter lymph; site where immune response is initiated against a substance in the lymph
  • Spleen:
    • Located in the left upper quadrant of the abdomen, near 9th–11th ribs
    • Function: filters blood; site where immune response is initiated against a substance in the blood; removes aged erythrocytes and platelets; serves as erythrocyte and platelet reservoir
  • Tonsils:
    • Located in the oral cavity and pharynx (throat)
    • Function: protect against inhaled and ingested substances
  • MALT (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue):
    • Located in clusters of lymphoid nodules within the walls of gastrointestinal (GI), respiratory, urinary, and reproductive tracts
    • Function: protects mucosal membranes against foreign substances
  • Lymphoid nodules:
    • Located in every body organ and wall of the appendix
    • Function: protect body organs against foreign substances

Learn about the two categories of lymphoid structures and their components in the lymphatic system including red bone marrow, thymus, lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT).
