Otitis Media Treatment

- Exposure to smoke
- Family history of recurrent otitis media
- Less than 8 weeks old with a temperature of 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
Prevention of Otitis Media
- Breastfeeding
- Keeping infants upright during feeding
- Avoiding secondhand smoke
- Limiting dairy products, which can thicken mucus
Ear Findings with Otitis Media:
- Erythema of tympanic membrane
- Decreased light reflex
- Thickened membrane
- Decreased mobility
- Bulging of the membrane with effusion
- Drainage with tympanic membrane rupture
Conductive Hearing Loss
- Otitis media is a common cause of temporary conductive hearing loss
- Otosclerosis is the most common inherited cause of conductive hearing loss
Sensorineural Hearing Loss: Inner Ear Disorders
- Meniere's Disease: Idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops
- Meniere's Syndrome: Caused by conditions that interfere with endolymph production
Other Causes of Hearing Loss
- Meningitis
- Cytomegalovirus infection
- Noise
- Medications (aspirin toxicity, chemotherapy, IV antibiotics)
- Severe cerebral palsy
- Tumors
- Head trauma
Tinnitus
- Perception of sound without an external stimulus
- Can be ringing, tingling, intermittent, or continuous

Vertigo
- Sensation of spinning or movement in space
- Subjective vertigo: Person feels like they are moving
