Organs of Speech
- Sounds are produced by air from the lungs passing through the throat and out the nose or mouth
- The organs of speech are parts of the vocal tract that modify the flow of air
- The articulators include the lips, teeth, tongue, alveolar ridge, hard palate, soft palate, vocal cords, pharynx, lower jaw, nose and nasal cavity
- The vocal cords can be in four different positions: wide apart (normal breathing or voiceless consonants), narrow glottis, vocal fold vibration (voiced sounds), and closure (no air passes)
Vowels
- Vowels are voiced sounds produced without obstruction to airflow
- Vowels differ from consonants in distribution and context
- Vowels are always syllabic and form the center of a syllable
- There are 20 vowels in the English language: 12 cardinal-single vowels and 8 diphthongs
- Cardinal vowels are located on a four-sided figure for easy classification and comparison
