Study Notes
Organizational Behavior (OB)
- OB investigates how individuals, groups, and organizational structures affect behavior within organizations. The goal is to improve organizational effectiveness.
Complementing Intuition with Systematic Study
- Behavior is predictable if we understand a person's perception of the situation and their priorities.
- Evidence-Based Management (EBM) supports using data to inform decision-making.
- Intuition, or "gut feelings," about why we do things and why others act the way they do, can be supplemented by systematic study and EBM. Decisions based solely on intuition often lack complete information.
Major Disciplines Contributing to OB
- Psychology looks to understand, explain, measure, and sometimes change human behavior (including animals).
- Social psychology blends concepts from psychology and sociology.
- Sociology studies people in relation to their social environment or culture.
- Anthropology studies societies to understand human beings and their activities.
Three Levels of Analysis in OB
- Inputs: Variables that lead to processes; include individual characteristics (diversity, personality, values), group structure, group roles, team responsibilities, organizational structure, and culture. These factors often change over time.
- Processes: Actions or behaviors; examples include emotions, moods, motivation, perception, decision-making, communication, leadership, power dynamics, conflict, negotiation, human resource management, and change practices.
- Outcomes: Key variables; these are affected by inputs and processes; examples include individual variables such as attitudes, stress, task performance, citizenship behaviour, withdrawal behavior; group variables such as cohesion and group functioning; and organizational variables like productivity and survival.
Outcome Variables
- Attitudes and stress: Employee attitudes represent evaluations of objects, people, or events, ranging from positive to negative. Stress is an unpleasant psychological reaction to environmental pressures.
- Task performance: Combining effectiveness and efficiency in core job tasks reflects the level of task performance.
- Organizational citizenship behavior: Discretionary actions outside formal job requirements that benefit the workplace environment.
- Withdrawal behavior: Actions employees take to separate themselves from the organization.
- Group cohesion: The extent to which group members support and validate each other.
- Group functioning: The quantity and quality of a group's work output.
- Productivity: An organization is productive when it accomplishes its goals by transforming inputs into outputs at the lowest cost, relying on both effectiveness and efficiency.
- Survival: Organizational survival is evidenced by the organization's sustained existence and growth over time.
