Carbon is one of the most important elements in organic chemistry due to its ability to bond with itself and other elements, forming hundreds of thousands of unique structures. Carbon compounds can form diverse chemical bonds because carbon has four valence electrons. These allow it to link up with other atoms, such as oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, silicon, etc., through covalent bonding. This process leads to a wide variety of molecules being formed from allotropes like graphite and diamond.
Organic Chemistry deals primarily with carbon compounds. Organic chemists often work with hydrocarbons, which are made entirely out of carbon and hydrogen. Hydrocarbons come in many forms: alkanes (saturated), alkenes (unsaturated), and aromatics (benzene rings). Alkanes have single bonds between carbons, while alkenes have double bonds. Aromatic compounds contain benzene rings with alternating double and triple bonds. Their stability comes from delocalizing electron density over the ring structure.
The carbon cycle plays an essential part in the formation of organic matter, including carbon compounds. It describes the movement of carbon through different parts of Earth, such as oceans, atmosphere, plants, animals, rocks, water, etc.. One key aspect of the carbon cycle involves photosynthesis where carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air is used by plants during daylight hours to produce glucose energy. Another part of the carbon cycle includes decomposition of dead organisms, whose remains become soil or fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, natural gas). Plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, converting it into sugars and releasing O2. This goes on continuously as long as sunlight hits the planet.
