Study Notes
Compounds: Organic and Inorganic
- Compounds can be classified into two main groups: organic and inorganic.
- Organic compounds are primarily composed of carbon and are often found in living organisms.
- Inorganic compounds are composed of elements other than carbon and are typically found in nonliving matter.
Organic Compounds
- Organic compounds can be classified into several groups, such as alkanes, alkenes, and alkynes, based on their molecular structure and bonding.
- Alkanes contain only single bonds between carbon atoms and are saturated hydrocarbons.
- Alkenes have at least one double bond between carbon atoms and are unsaturated hydrocarbons.
- Alkynes have at least one triple bond between carbon atoms and are unsaturated hydrocarbons.
- Examples of common organic compounds include ethanol (used as a fuel and solvent), methane (a primary component of natural gas), and glucose (a simple sugar).
Inorganic Compounds
- Inorganic compounds are found in various forms in nature, including oxides, carbonates, sulphides, sulphates, chlorides, and nitrates.
- Oxides are compounds that contain oxygen and another element.
- Oxides can be classified as metallic or nonmetallic, based on the element they are combined with.
- Metallic oxides are typically basic in nature, while nonmetallic oxides are acidic.
- Examples of common oxides include carbon dioxide (CO2) and sodium oxide (Na2O).
- Acids are compounds that produce hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water.
- Bases are compounds that produce hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water.
- Salts are compounds that form when an acid reacts with a base, releasing water (H2O) as a product.
Molecules
- Molecules are formed when two or more atoms bond together.
- Molecules can be classified as monatomic, diatomic, or polyatomic, based on the number of atoms they contain.
- Monatomic molecules consist of a single atom, such as helium (He).
- Diatomic molecules consist of two atoms, such as oxygen (O2) and nitrogen (N2).
- Polyatomic molecules consist of more than two atoms, such as ozone (O3).
- Molecules can also be classified as molecules of elements (formed from only one type of atom) or molecules of compounds (formed from different types of atoms).
Safety Precautions with Acids and Bases
- Acids and bases can be corrosive and dangerous if not handled properly.
- Always wear appropriate safety equipment, such as gloves and goggles, when handling acids and bases.
- Never mix acids and bases without proper supervision and knowledge of the potential reactions.
- If accidental contact occurs, immediately flush the affected area with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
