Study Notes
Hard Palate Anatomy
- The hard palate is formed by the maxilla and palatine bones.
- The incisive fossa is located in the midline of the anterior hard palate, between the central incisors.
Muscles of the Soft Palate
- The main action of the musculus uvula is to shorten and elevate the uvula during swallowing.
- The levator veli palatini muscle primarily elevates the soft palate to close off the nasopharynx during swallowing.
- The tensor veli palatini muscle is innervated by the mandibular nerve (V3) of the trigeminal nerve.
Nerve and Vascular Supply
- The greater palatine nerve exits the greater palatine foramen and courses along the hard palate, providing sensory innervation.
- The lesser palatine nerve exits through the lesser palatine foramen, supplying the soft palate and tonsillar region.
- The arterial supply of the hard and soft palate primarily comes from the maxillary artery, including the greater and lesser palatine branches.
- The artery passing through the lesser palatine foramen to supply the soft palate is the lesser palatine artery.
Tongue Innervation
- All intrinsic muscles of the tongue, except the palatoglossus, are innervated by the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII).
- The palatoglossus muscle is innervated by the vagus nerve (CN X).
- The anterior two-thirds of the tongue receives general sensation from the lingual nerve, a branch of the mandibular nerve (V3).
- The posterior one-third of the tongue is innervated for general sensation by the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX).
- The chorda tympani, a branch of the facial nerve (CN VII), innervates the anterior two-thirds of the tongue for taste.
- Taste sensation for the posterior one-third of the tongue is provided by the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX).
Alveolar Arch Innervation
- The inferior (mandibular) alveolar arch is supplied by the inferior alveolar nerve, a branch of the mandibular nerve (V3).
- The superior (maxillary) alveolar arch is supplied by the superior alveolar nerves, branches of the maxillary nerve (V2).
