Study Notes
Arithmetic Operations
- Addition: Combines two or more numbers to find a total. The + symbol represents addition. Commutative property applies: a + b = b + a. Associative property applies: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c).
- Subtraction: Finds the difference between two numbers. The - symbol represents subtraction. Not commutative or associative.
- Multiplication: Repeated addition of a number. The × or * symbol represents multiplication. Commutative property applies: a × b = b × a. Associative property applies: (a × b) × c = a × (b × c). Distributive property relates multiplication and addition: a × (b + c) = (a × b) + (a × c).
- Examples:
- Addition: 5 + 3 = 8
- Subtraction: 10 - 4 = 6
- Multiplication: 7 × 2 = 14
Statistical Concepts (brief overview)
- Statistics: A branch of mathematics dealing with collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data.
- Data: Numerical facts or figures collected for analysis.
- Variables: Characteristics or quantities that vary within a dataset. Examples include height, weight, and age.
- Descriptive Statistics: Methods for summarizing and describing data, often using measures like mean, median, mode, and standard deviation.
- Inferential Statistics: Methods for drawing conclusions about a population based on a sample of data.
Further mathematical concepts and processes (basic arithmetic)
- Order of operations (PEMDAS or BODMAS): A set of rules for evaluating expressions with multiple operations. In PEMDAS, this is Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). In BODMAS, it's Brackets, Orders, Division and Multiplication (from left to right), Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).
- Factors and multiples: A factor of a number is a number that divides it evenly. A multiple of a number is the result of multiplying that number by an integer.
- Prime numbers: Whole numbers greater than 1 that are only divisible by 1 and themselves.
- Integers: The set of whole numbers and their opposites (negative numbers).
- Rational Numbers: Numbers that can be expressed as a fraction p/q, where p and q are integers and q is not zero.
- Rounding: Approximating a number to a given degree of accuracy.
