Study Notes

Radioactive Elements

  • Radioactive elements have unstable nuclei and undergo radioactive decay
  • Radioactive decay involves the nucleus giving off particles and high-energy radiation
  • Atoms transform into different elements when particles and energy are released
  • Alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma rays (high energy radiation) are the three types of radiation emitted during radioactive decay
  • Some radioactive elements occur naturally, while others are synthetic

Actinides

  • All actinides are radioactive and unstable
  • Uranium (U) and plutonium (Pu) are the most well-known actinides
  • Uranium (U) is the most stable actinide
  • Uranium (U) is used as fuel for nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons
  • Plutonium (Pu) is used in nuclear weapons and to power space exploration equipment

Lanthanides

  • Lanthanides are known for their similarities
  • There are 15 lanthanides and they are reactive
  • Lanthanides are also called "Rare Earth Elements" (REEs)
  • Rare earth elements are difficult and expensive to mine and extract from rock (ores), despite their name
  • Scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y), found in group 3, are also considered rare earth elements
  • Rare earth elements are crucial components in many electronic devices
  • Rare earth elements are used to manufacture permanent magnets for electronics such as cell phones, televisions, computers, automobiles, wind turbines, and jet aircraft
