Objectives of Community Health Nursing

Increase capability of individuals, families, groups, and communities to deal with their own health and nursing problems
Strengthen community resources to improve health outcomes
Control and counteract environmental factors that affect health
Prevent and control communicable and non-communicable diseases through education and interventions
Provide specialized services for vulnerable populations, including mothers, children, adults, workers, elderly, handicapped, and eligible couples

Characteristics of Community Health Nursing

The client or “unit of care” is the population, focusing on overall health and well-being
Primary obligation is to achieve the greatest good for the greatest number of people or the population as a whole
Public health nurses work with clients as equal partners to develop solutions
Primary prevention is the priority in selecting appropriate activities to prevent health problems
Focus on creating healthy environmental, social, and economic conditions for populations to thrive
Obligation to actively reach out to all who might benefit from specific activities or services
